COMMANDING OFFICER'S PHILOSOPHY

Viktor Frankl, in Man’s Search for Meaning, asserted that “success, like happiness, cannot be pursued; it must ensue, and it only does so as the unintended side-effect of one's dedication to a cause greater than oneself.” Your choice to work in healthcare or to serve in the United States Navy is a clear commitment to a cause greater than yourself. The foundational behavior that will drive our mission success in this noble cause, and thus my leadership philosophy, can be distilled into two words.

Be good.

This simple directive should guide us in every facet of our service, reminding us of our duty to ourselves, our colleagues, our clinic, and our country. With unwavering commitment to this charge, we will elevate our collective purpose and forge a legacy of excellence.

1. Be good to yourself. Prioritize self-care. Physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual fitness is critical in maintaining your readiness to care for others. Nurturing toughness builds resilience for the challenges ahead. Find the right work-life balance and continue to assess and adjust this over time. It is a constantly changing dynamic process. Create a plan for both your professional and personal development and be flexible: There will be many on and off ramps with surprisingly positive outcomes. Engage in hobbies and activities you enjoy. Surround yourself with positive role models.

2. Be good to each other. Be present in the lives of others. Walk your spaces and talk to your colleagues. Know what they need and what they care about. Foster your team’s professional and personal development. If they can’t get answers they need, find the answers for them. Be transparent in your own leadership expectations: Be predictable. Help your peers adhere to our high standards of conduct. Be trustworthy and foster mutual respect in all relationships.

3. Be good to our clinic. Make your commitment to safe, reliable, quality healthcare shine brightly. Foster a culture of continuous learning, innovation, and teamwork to ensure the best care delivery for our patients. Be attentive and smile: You have one chance to make a first impression. This is also about our physical buildings and grounds. Take ownership of your spaces and our facility. Just as you and your behavior represent NHC Lemoore, Hornet, Fallon, and Monterey, our buildings and their interiors represent you. Keep them clean, healthy, and joyful.

4. Be good to our country. You are endowed with the trust of our citizens to be ethical and ready to protect their freedom and democracy. Be responsible for how we spend their money – your salary, our facilities, equipment, and supplies are paid for by your family, friends, and neighbors. Be ready for the fight: The United States of America and all citizens depend on you to be prepared when the balloon goes up. We care for each other, our warfighters, and our families, during peacetime and conflict. You represent the United States of America 24/7, whether you are in uniform or civilian clothing. Be proud, and most of all, be good.
